Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez did what he said he would not for several months of 2024 – change his mind on his future of the club. In a chaotic week, where first it appeared that the club were keen to move on from him, but a meeting ended with an agreement to continue, President Joan Laporta announced that Xavi would continue in his post for another season.

That decision has not been met with the outpouring of delight that one might have hoped in Can Barca. Days later, Barcelona collapsed to a 4-2 defeat to Girona at Montilivi, while in their home game against Real Sociedad the singing section sang his name. That was met with the odd whistle, but there were also faint chants of ‘Barcelona yes, Laporta no’ in the stands at Montjuic.

As per Cadena SER, Sporting Director Deco was not in agreement with the decision to continue with Xavi, despite public denials from both. They also reveal that those close to Xavi are urging him to leave the club as soon as possible, seeing no way that things can end well.

It would take an enormous shedding of ego for Xavi to make a second U-turn on his future, knowing that he would be subject to the ridicule of all. Already the image of Xavi has been dimmed in the Catalan press, but such unstable leadership would perhaps impact on any hopes he has of landing another job down the line.
